Jack Macqueen Trophy – Manly Golf Club
The Jack Macqueen Memorial Trophy, donated in 1990, is played annually at Manly Golf Club. Jack Macqueen was a long-time golfer and administrator, serving as President, Captain, and Life Member of the Society. At the time of his passing, he was also the Club Patron of Manly.
A small but enthusiastic field of 23 players gathered to contest this year’s trophy. After morning showers returned around 11am, the sun broke through by midday as players arrived at the club to enjoy pre-match coffee, sandwiches, and for some, a pre-golf ale.
The afternoon turned into a beautiful day on the Northern Beaches, with a light sea breeze helping to keep the humidity down while adding just enough challenge for thoughtful club selection.
Despite Sydney receiving over 100mm of torrential rain during the previous week, the course held up exceptionally well and was presented in outstanding condition. Due to recent weather, bunkers were declared out of play under local rules while the course team continued restoration work. Additionally, a preferred lie of 30cm was adopted through the general area to account for any remaining wet patches.
Event Format
The competition was played as an Individual Stableford event, with the highest score taking home the trophy along with a set of commemorative wine glasses.
Results
Trophy Winner: Guy Wall, Pymble (scratch) – 39 points
(Wine Glass Set & 6 golf balls)
Guy produced an excellent round of 3-under par, highlighted by hitting nearly all greens in regulation. He was highly complimentary of the course setup, noting that playing from the shorter “Seniors” tees made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Closing Remarks
President John Barbour started with a minute silence for the passing of Jon Nicholls, a well respected member of the Elanora Club.
John extended the Society’s appreciation to the Board and Management of Manly Golf Club for hosting the Seniors, conveyed through Manly member David Cleary, along with several other Manly members in attendance.
We also welcomed new member Chris Yuncken (Elanora CC) to the Society.
I had the pleasure of playing with long-time Manly & Elanora member Bob Pfaffin, who shared that he had played many times with Jack Macqueen and spoke very fondly of both his golfing ability and his friendly demeanour. One memorable piece of advice Jack gave when discussing the rules was: “If you’re unsure, don’t touch it.”
